Carmichael wins fifth consecutive supercross race
By Curt Cavin, The Indianapolis Star
Ricky Carmichael once left the RCA Dome in Indianapolis to a chorus of boos after bumping one of the most popular riders in supercross history.
Saturday night, a dome crowd of 52,833 blanketed Carmichael in awe and appreciation after another nearly flawless ride produced his fifth consecutive win.
Carmichael, a native of Havana, Fla., held off Australia's Chad Reed by 7.59 seconds in what essentially begins a coronation of the champion in the THQ AMA Supercross Series.
Carmichael has lost only once this season — when he fell twice in the opening race in Anaheim, Calif. — and has barely been challenged of late. A year after major knee surgery, Carmichael is on pace for his fourth supercross championship in five years, putting him well on the road to matching Jeremy McGrath's record of seven titles.
"I feel better to have (the cheers)," said Carmichael, remembering his tangle with Travis Pastrana in 2002. "Having the fans behind me gives me a lot of confidence to go out there and ride."
