Boston Red Sox have a new answer for right-handed pitching
Change in order for Trot Nixon
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The
Red Sox will have a new wrinkle to their lineup against right-handed pitching this season, as Trot Nixon will move up to the No. 2 spot in the order, hitting behind Johnny Damon and in front of mashers Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz. Sox manager Terry Francona announced the move prior to Friday's game against the
Twins.
Originally, the plan was for shortstop Edgar Renteria to make the majority of the starts in the two-hole. But after putting some more thought and statistical research into the matter, Francona liked the idea of having Nixon move from the middle to the top of the order.
"Our two-hole is a little bit more of an RBI position than maybe other clubs," said Francona. "I think we can take advantage of that with Trot. We have two of the best three and four hitters in baseball. [Trot is] a good hitter."
