One of the most influential groups in the history of R&B, The GAP Band , has made themselves famous with their non-stop humorous funk grooves. They started performing in 1967 under the name of “Greenwood Archer Pine Streets Band” named after the black business hub of their native Tulsa , Oklahoma . The name was too long for any posters so they simply shortened it to G.A.P. band. Then, through a typographical error it was turned into The GAP Band During the bands early career, they opened for names such as The Rolling Stones, J.J. Cale , Willie Nelson, D.J. Rogers, and Leon Russell. They have always been a touring powerhouse and have even been called, “the black Aerosmith ”. They have influenced the “new school” of performers like R. Kelley, Keith Sweat, Ruff Endz , Blackstreet , and Jagged Edge. From the late 70's to early 80's the band dominated the R&B charts with their hard driving funk grooves.
