Healthy and happy, Garciaparra is bearing up well

He may be wearing a Chicago Cubs uniform now, but Nomar Garciaparra still has game. Running freely on feet no longer encumbered by pain, he stole second base in a game last week, and the next day, the afternoon of the rendezvous with Cabrera, he hit a single, double, and home run, that familiar compact stroke crackling with staccato bursts of energy.

"I wanted him back, I wanted him back big-time," said Dusty Baker, the Cubs manager punctuating his words with a deep-throated uhhhh-huhhhh, the kind of murmured assent you might hear from old men responding to prayer at a Sunday morning service.
