Four hundred tickets alloted to UM for the Sept. 5 University of Miami at Florida State football game were returned to FSU. And at 6 p.m. today, those tickets will be available online at www.seminoles.com.
Miami athletic director Paul Dee said Thursday that the unsold tickets were part of a UM allotment of 10,000-plus. Two factors contributed to the surplus:
• UM only offers single-game road tickets to season-ticket holders or members of its booster club -- the Hurricane Club.
• This year's game is on Labor Day night, a Monday, and has made the prospect of going to Tallahassee more complicated because of work and school the next day.
''I guarantee you, if this game was on Saturday, the tickets would be sold out and there would be a premium on them,'' said Hurricane Club president-elect Harry Rothwell. ``But the fact that this game is on a Monday night caused a lot of travel concerns for people. It's a good eight to nine hours even if you're cruising 75 miles an hour [from Miami] to Tallahassee.''
Dee said UM's policy of only offering tickets to Hurricane Club members and season-ticket holders was made to increase membership and the season-ticket base.
In explaining why UM wouldn't offer the final 400 tickets to the general public so that more UM fans could fill the seats, Dee said, ``Those are the rules of the game, and we're not going to change the rules at the end. If we were going to do that, we'd let everybody know from the beginning.'' More>>>
