LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - There were so many instruments onstage Monday at the Greek Theater that some fans wondered if the White Stripes might stray from their two-person lineup and bring on some hired hands. Those thoughts, however, vanished as the evening progressed. While the Detroit duo stuck to the basic guitar and drums pairing for most of their 90-minute-plus set, the evening's most engaging moments came when Jack White put down his electric guitar and Meg White stepped out from behind her drum kit.
With its guitar-and-drums lineup and sizzling update of the blues, the Stripes already had proven to be one of the most exciting acts of the decade on its first five studio albums and its scorching live dates. Not content to rest on his laurels, head Stripe Jack threw a curveball with the release of "Get Behind Me Satan," this summer. The album features several tracks in which his blistering guitar is replaced by piano, marimba and acoustic guitar. While the change on instrumentation made for interesting listening, it remained to be seen if the Stripes could pull it off live. On Monday, the first of the band's four-show run at the Greek, the Stripes laid all doubts to rest, with Jack not relying solely on the most potent weapon in his growing arsenal of sound, his electric guitar.
