George Strait will headline the multigenerational, star-filled One Country concert that brings Nashville headliners Kenny Chesney, Alan Jackson and Martina McBride together with Texas' own Willie Nelson to raise money for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.
The Oct. 1 event will be at Reliant Stadium, next door to the Astrodome where thousands of New Orleans evacuees found shelter. One Country also will be broadcast to the rest of the country live by Country Music Television.
"I watched my birthplace float away," said Louis Messina, a New Orleans native and president of the concert promotions firm The Messina Group/AEG in a statement. "I knew I needed to help, and this is the way I could reach most people."
Organizers say that additional musicians might join the lineup.
Others who have pledged their talent and resources to the show include local author and philanthropist Carolyn Farb, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo chairman Paul Somerville and Reliant Park President and GM Shea Guinn. The show is being produced almost entirely with donated equipment, services and staffing.
Tickets for the show go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday through Ticketmaster. Tickets are $39.50-$125 (a limited number of $1,000 VIP packages are also available), and Ticketmaster has pledged to donate all its services and convenience charges to Katrina relief organizations.
