The Padres today unveiled a magic number countdown atop the Western Metal Supply Co. building to chronicle the team’s march toward its first potential playoff appearance since 1998, and the first postseason games ever at PETCO Park. The countdown will reveal the Padres’ magic number (the number of Padres wins or losses by the opponent closest in the standings) necessary for the team to clinch the National League West Division championship. The now stands at "8" before the Padres 5:35 p.m. game tonight at Colorado.
"With seven of the remaining 12 games of the season at home against the Giants and Dodgers, fans have a great opportunity to be a part of Padres’ history," said Sandy Alderson, CEO of the Padres. "The drive to clinch a division championship and return to the playoffs for the fourth time in history will be exciting to watch."
The Padres also announced that tickets for two potential National League Division Series games will go on sale to the public Saturday, Oct. 1 at 9 a.m.
