It looks like it'll be a Merry Christmas for the Sun Bowl.
A day after announcing that UCLA (9-2) will face Northwestern (7-4) in the 72nd annual Vitalis Sun Bowl on Dec. 30, game officials reported record first-day ticket sales Monday.
"We have six phone lines in our offices," Sun Bowl media relations director Trent Hilburn said, "and they were lit up like a Christmas tree all day."
Sun Bowl ticket manager Ellen Hughes, in her 15th year, said first-day sales were among the best.
"I would say if it's not the best," Hughes said, "it's among the top two or three first days of sales of all-time around here."
UCLA's Karl Dorrell brings his Bruins to El Paso for the first time since 2000. Northwestern, coached by Randy Walker, will be making its first appearance.
The two teams combined for more than 900 yards of offense per game this season, promising a lot of points in the Sun Bowl.
Hughes said brisk online sales, mostly to Northwestern fans, have allowed the bowl to already surpass more than 27,000 tickets sold. Sun Bowl executive director Bernie Olivas said that's well ahead of last year at this point. The game recorded its first sellout in 2004, attracting 51,288 to watch Arizona State beat Purdue. MORE>>>
