LOS ANGELES - Studying was the furthest thing from UCLA and USC students' minds Friday as the cross-town rivalry heated up before Saturday's football game at the La Coliseum
Tickets for the game are commanding unprecedented sums, with some going for as much as $2,500 per ticket, according to ticket brokers.
"For a college football game, it's off the charts," Sean Pate, a spokesman for the StubHub Web site, where fans buy and sell seats, told the Los Angeles Times. "It's a traditional rivalry. There's so much on the line. It's a perfect storm of variables."
At midweek, USC-UCLA tickets -- face value $65 -- had sold for an average of $352 on the site, with the most expensive seat going for $2,500, The Times reported. Those prices ranked only slightly behind the recent World Series and last year's Super Bowl.
Los Angeles ticket brokers told The Times they have never seen such interest in the rivalry game, which has sold out seven times in the last decade.
Saturday's game will be the 75th in the cross-town rivalry, and much is riding on it for both teams. If the top-ranked Trojans win, thus remaining undefeated, they will earn a berth in the national championship game at the Rose Bowl on Jan. 4.
If the 11th-ranked Bruins score an upset, they will end a six-year drought against USC. The Bruins were defeated once this year.
The weather is expected to cooperate, with Friday's rains passing out of the area by Saturday's 1:30 p.m. game time. Source>>>
