For about the price of one CD, Napster subscribers can now pack their portable music player with unlimited songs, delivering a new challenge to Apple Computer's buck-a-song iTunes model.
Napster To Go launches Thursday and costs $15 a month. It's the first digital music service to use Microsoft's long-anticipated Janus technology, which allows monthly subscribers to take their music with them instead of having to pay for an individual song each time they want something new in their MP3 player.
"Janus allows you to take an encrypted download from your PC hard drive and move it to your portable device with an electronic license, then that has to be renewed every 30 days," said Napster CEO Chris Gorog.
As long as subscribers keep paying the monthly fee, they can transfer as many songs as they like from Napster's catalog, which now totals more than 1 million tunes, to a portable device. If Napster users want to burn tracks to CDs, they must pay the standard $1 price tag.
Napster To Go is the first attempt by a digital music service to differentiate itself from what Apple offers in the iTunes Music Store. The feature gives consumers new choices and provides another method for digital music services and devices to compete with Apple. More>>>
