Tom Jones in concert, Friday, April 1, 2005 at 7:30pm
In his native Wales he is simply known as 'Jones The Voice'. And what a voice! It's a big, powerful, unmistakable voice that's been entertaining audiences around the world for over forty years.
Jones left school at an early age and worked at a variety of jobs by day and sang in pubs at night. By 1963, he had gained notoriety with his own band Tommy Scott and the Senators. They regularly played working-class clubs and dance halls. Gordon Mills started managing Tom and took him to London to promote him. It was not an easy task, as record companies found him disconcerting. The vocal sound was raucous and too powerful, the performance style too forward and sexual. He sounded black and moved like Presley. Then in late 1964, Jones landed a record contract with Decca Records. The first single was not a great success, but the next choice, a song called It's Not Unusual, was a huge international hit. Considered 'too hot' by the established BBC radio at the time, it was broken by a pirate offshore radio station. By the next year, Tom was opening for the Rolling Stones and touring with the Spencer Davis Group.
The hit singles What's New Pussycat, Help Yourself, Never Fall In Love Again, Without Love, Delilah , Green Green Grass of Home and She's a Lady followed. Tom became a sensational live performer, performing in venues that ranged from Las Vegas (he still regularly performs there) to arenas worldwide. By 1971, Tom had already sold over 30 million records.
A great believer in stretching his wings, Jones tried his hand at television (The Simpsons in 1992) and film (Mars Attacks! In '96) and contributed to the James Bond soundtrack with the familiar 007 theme ? Thunderball. In 1997, Tom recorded the Randy Newman classic You Can Leave Your Hat On for the hit Oscar-winning film soundtrack The Full Monty. The 1999 release of his Reload album cemented Tom's reputation as an artist with the ability to work with the best of contemporary music selling over 5 million copies worldwide and featuring collaborations with the Cardigans, Stereophonics, The Divine Comedy, Van Morrison, Chrissie Hynde, Robbie Williams and James Dean Bradfield.
Jones is one of the most enduring personalities in the music entertainment business. He has sustained his popularity for more than four decades with recordings spanning the spectrum from pop, rock and country to classic standards, rhythm and blues to boogie woogie and rockabilly through to contemporary dance and urban soul.
