The Mars Volta does not make easy-listening music: Mars Volta takes a ride
Mars Volta takes a ride
The Mars Volta does not make easy-listening music.
The two-man team of singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala and guitarist/producer Omar A. Rodriguez-Lopez built The Mars Volta out of the ashes of the beloved post-punk band At The Drive In, taking that band's frenzied riffs and singing while upping the musical ante exponentially.
Their debut, De-Loused in the Comatorium, was a heady mix of punk, Latin rhythms, twisting prog-rock riffs and Bixler-Zavala's impassioned strangled yowl. It was the kind of record that initially had to make the record company suits cringe, until it went on to garner reams of critical acclaim and more importantly (to the suits) it almost went gold.
For their sophomore effort, Frances the Mute, the duo has again upped the ante. While the 10-track De-Loused had an overall concept and some extended songs, Frances clocks in at 77 minutes spread across only five ``songs'' (though there are 12 separate tracks), with titles such as the five-part Cassandra Gemini.
The concept comes from a diary found in the back seat of a car by late bandmate Jeremy Ward, which told of the unknown author's adoption and search for his real parents. Having that bit of exposition will do most listeners absolutely no good, as Bixler-Zavala's lyrics are typically cryptic, open-ended and packed with unsettling imagery, sung and yelped in Spanish and English.
