NASCAR NUMBERS, ALL NUMBERS, NOTHING BUT NUMBERS, WHAT IS IN A NUMBER?
What is in a number?
For many years, the number of choice was 36. 36 races in a season and those 36 races determined the number 1: winner of the Winston Cup. Now the number one is determined by two numbers: 26 and ten. 26 races to make it to the top ten, or 400 points. Then ten races to make it to number one.
There are 43 drivers in a race, but of those 43, a good 10% never see the finish line each week. Heck, last week, you didn’t even need all your fingers and toes to count the number of guys left on the lead lap at the end of the race. Almost as many were taken out in a first lap crash.
30 was an important number this weekend. Only the top 30 Busch teams were guaranteed a slot in the race yesterday in Nashville, and those slots were determined this year, not last. Next week is the last week for the Cup teams to rely on 2004 owner points.
Martinsville is week one for 2005 points for the big boys in NASCAR…and there are a few that are still out of reach of that magical number 35.
The numbers 21, 18, 14, 7 and 4 are the Cup regulars who are well behind that #35 slot right now, and with
Bristol standing in their way, things aren’t looking all that bright that they might crack the top 35 when they need to. 35 is also the number of drivers currently within the magic 400 points needed to get in the chase.
Somehow, you know that number is going to change, and not for the better, over the course of the next 5 months.
Four is the number of drivers who, with just four races under their belt, already have a million dollars in the bank. Not bad. Interestingly, though, one of those drivers is Dale Earnhardt, Junior, who is no where near the top 10, sitting way back in 26th. Right in front of his teammate, Michael Waltrip, who is just 13 points behind him. Amazing what three races can do for you. Junior was 3rd in points after race 1, and Mikey was 37th. Now Junior is in the place many fans never thought to see him…about to get passed by his teammate.
