Red Sox consider building ice rink at Fenway Park
BOSTON- Fenway Park could stay open for business next winter while the Boston Red Sox are on ice.
The team's owners are pushing a plan to build a seasonal ice rink on top of Fenway's hallowed ground. The rink would host college hockey games and public skating sessions during baseball's off-season.
A Red Sox official says the rink could be open as early as the end of this year.
But, first, the team needs the city's permission to open the rink. The Red Sox also want to make sure the ice won't damage the stadium's infield or its new turf.
Earlier this week, team officials announced they intend to keep the Red Sox in Fenway for the long term. The rink plan is part of the team's effort to squeeze more money out of baseball's oldest and smallest stadium.
