Eyewitness says Sheffield got an earful
Red Sox fans in the right field stands were taunting
New York Yankees outfielder Gary Sheffield mercilessly before he got into a violent confrontation with a fan who came in contact with the outfielder as he went after Jason Varitek's eighth-inning triple Thursday night, an eyewitness said.
``People in our section were screaming and busting on Gary about steroids for the entire game, chanting `Balco' and, `Hey Gary, I got some flaxseed for you.' I'm sure he was getting pissed,'' said Keith Whamond, who was seated in Section 86, Row 2.
Whamond, who took up-close pictures of the incident for FHM magazine, also said he doesn't believe the fan, Chris House, touched Sheffield on purpose.
According to Whamond, when Varitek's hit started to trickle up the first-base side, ``guys starting throwing themselves over the wall trying to catch the ball. I don't think that guy was trying to hit Sheffield - I think he was going for the ball, and I guess he touched Sheff's face.
