MARK TWAIN TONIGHT
Wed, May 4
Kingsbury Hall
Hal Holbrook has been portraying Mark Twain on stage for over 50 years and has performed more than 2,000 shows, including an off-Broadway run in 1959, a Broadwayrun in 1966 (that earned him a Tony), and a 1967 prime time version on CBS that earned him an Emmy nomination. Holbrook has over 15 hours of Twain material memorized. When he goes on stage, he has an idea of what he is going to perform, but will often change his plans on stage, so he never performs the same show twice. He will often find relevant Twain passages to remark on current world events.
He also enjoys reading to audiences on stage and will often read from Twain’s classic novel Huckleberry Finn and from others. As Holbrook says, “I like to make people think, and that’s what Mark Twain did. He forces you to think. That’s the greatest gift he’s ever given me, and I love sharing that gift with audiences.”
