IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- Season-ticket holders for Iowa football games will be required to make an annual contribution on top of the cost of the tickets if they want the best seats at Kinnick Stadium.
"In last few years especially, driven by increasing costs involved in intercollegiate athletes -- especially escalating scholarship costs -- we looked at what we needed to do to compete," said Andy Piro, senior director of development and intercollegiate athletes at the University of Iowa Foundation.
Many fans will need to contribute from $50 a seat up to $600 a seat, depending on the location in the stadium. Four tickets on the 50-yard line would require an annual contribution of $2,400.
Piro said the new gift requirement, which takes effect in 2006, was expected to raise at least $1 million each year to help the athletic department.
Season ticket holders will be scored on a point system to determine where their seats will be. The system awards season ticket buyers based on longevity and generosity.
Fans get points for each year they've had season tickets since 1972 and for every $100 they've donated since 1974.
Points also are awarded for annual I-Club gifts, Iowa graduates and Hawkeye letter winners.
"We needed to come up with a fair and objective way to re-seat Kinnick," Piro said. "This is our way to do that in a fair, objective way."
Everyone who bought season tickets for the upcoming season will be notified in October what their point total is, giving them a better idea of where their seats will be for the 2006 season. Whole Article
