LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Forget anger management. Disturbed singer Dave Draiman is handling his just fine onstage.
The Chicago band packed the Roxy in West Hollywood on Saturday for a special show previewing its upcoming album, "Ten Thousand Fists," and seized an opportunity to get hot and sweaty in closed quarters with hard-core fans.
From the sound of it, the new material is more of the same: brutal salvos of sonic ammunition aimed at the world and built for a primal scream, true to a credo that life is a struggle without joy, so let's celebrate.
Bald Draiman, with piercings under his lip, was defender of the metal faith, preaching to the faithful, who raised fists on command and (of course) frequently flashed the universal hand sign for rock with index and pinky fingers extended.
A freight train-paced opener, the new "Guarded," was followed by the rallying cry of "Liberate," and the band's power was unleashed. Although Disturbed still falls prey to heavy metal cliches -- jackhammer rhythms and buzzsaw guitar riffs with Drainiman's chest-beating roars on top -- the group's passion and intelligence lifts it above its posing brethren in the metal world.
When he stepped back from raging drama, Draiman found a more compelling and vulnerable baritone that he should explore when not engaged in histrionic bellowing. "I don't want to be innocent," he implored over the triple-time tempo that carried the paranoia of "Fear." More>>>
