In-car entertainment systems to fight for share of satellite market

LAS VEGAS -- The living room isn't the only battleground for the high-tech titans here at the Consumer Electronics Show. So is the automobile.
Michigan-based Delphi and Visteon are big players at this year's show, touting their aftermarket radios -- excuse me, in-vehicle entertainment systems -- that offer DVD screens, multidisc CD changers and dashboard navigation gizmos.
But perhaps the most hard-fought automotive turf this year is between satellite radio providers Sirius and XM and the growing number of traditional AM and FM radio stations around the country hitching their fortunes to high-definition over-the-air broadcasts.
SIRIUS announced that it ended 2004 with more than a million subscribers. That's expected to more than double during the next year because Ford Motor Co. has announced plans to offer Sirius as a factory-installed option beginning this summer on four 2006 vehicle lines: the Ford F150, the Ford Explorer Lincoln Mark LT and Mercury Mountaineer.
