LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - The half-dozen band members sauntered onstage one by one, pounding and banging various percussion instruments. A rubber-limbed, pop-lockin' dancer in "Revenge of the Nerds" garb began his scenery-chewing shtick, and the sideshow was on.
Coming off the sullen "Sea Change" album, Beck seemed intent from the get-go to prove that the 2002 disc's title and glum mood were merely a threat and not a new career direction. The resulting playful, winsome and meticulously entertaining show gave notice that Beck is still having fun, his way.
As trippy images played on a bifocal-like video screen, Beck and his buddy-buddy band careened through his trademark mishmash of styles: a jagged or fuzzy guitar lick here, hip-hop nods and a get-fresh flow there, but mostly and most effectively visceral blue-eyed funk soaked in percussion. The controlled chaos of the songs was one-upped by onstage antics that often turned attention to the band, relegating the star to cohort.
Case in point: As Beck began a solo acoustic mini-set, a table and chairs -- complete with place settings -- were brought onstage. Four of the band members promptly sat down, had a "waiter" take their "order" and proceeded to dine, seemingly uninterested in the singer mere feet away. Maybe Beck was revisiting his formative years playing to the apathetic in L.A. cafes; or maybe it was just a fun-sounding idea that added to the anti-serious tone of the show. Either way, it worked entirely. More>>>
