MTV’s concert series “Unplugged“ returns with Alicia Keys.
The music series, MTV Unplugged, which featured bands like Nirvana, is coming back with a concert by Alicia Keys. The show could lead to more installments in the future.
The Alicia Keys concert was shot in July and will be broadcasted on Overdrive, MTV’s broadband network, which can be found on MTV.com on September 15. It will be televised on the cable network on September 23 at 10 p.m.
Keys told AP radio that she has “always been a very big fan of the show.” “Unplugged” began in 1989 with acoustic concerts. MTV drew some of the biggest singers and musicians during the show’s run, which ended in 1999. Source>>>

The National Football League season has kicked off with a bang and once again, ticket prices are higher than ever. Fans who pay anywhere from $50 to $250 for a single ticket may grouse about the price, but Dan Elfenbein, a business professor in the Olin School of Business at Washington University in St. Louis, said football teams routinely under-price their tickets and online ticket scalpers are reaping the benefits.
That teams sell tickets at prices far lower than their market value may seem to contradict economic logic. On average people who buy NFL tickets from scalpers online pay more than 50 percent above a ticket's face value. Markups are even higher in football-loving locales such as Green Bay and New England, Elfenbein said. Despite the disparity between face value and street value, Elfenbein says it actually makes sense that owners don't jack up ticket prices even more.
"With that kind of a markup on the street, the owners are leaving lot of value on the table," Elfenbein said. "By keeping the tickets below market price, the owners are more likely to fill the stadium, creating more opportunities for concession sales. Parking troubles aside, people really seem to enjoy going to full stadiums — the excitement level is that much greater. On the flip side, since most NFL teams have received some sort of public funding for stadium construction or other services, raising prices to levels that the market would support might cause people to rethink the use of public funds"
Elfenbein is an assistant professor of organization and strategy in the Olin School of Business at Washington University. Elfenbein's conclusions are derived in part from a study he conducted on the impact anti-scalping laws have on people selling regular season NFL tickets online. He examined more than 100,000 transactions processed by e-Bay and more than 100,000 "ask" prices for tickets sold via Ticketsnow.com, a leading Internet-based ticket reseller.
Although technically illegal in many states, ticket scalping online is quite hearty. Elfenbein says scalpers selling tickets to games in states with anti-scalping laws were able to command higher prices and higher mark-ups over face value than in states without those laws. Yet at the same time, anti-scalping states didn't see as much online trading. More>>>

TAMPA - More than 12,000 tickets have been sold within two weeks for Tampa light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver's fight against Roy Jones Jr. on Oct. 1 at the St. Pete Times Forum. The fight will be aired live on HBO pay-per-view.
Tickets went on sale Aug. 19 and more than 3,000 tickets were sold in three hours. Seating capacity was expected to be 17,000, but the ticket demand has officials trying to squeeze in more fans.
Tarver vs. Jones 3 will easily exceed the attendance marks of the previous two fights, which took place at Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Each had 12,000 fans in attendance.
In addition, Jones-Tarver I had 302,000 pay-per-view buys and Jones-Tarver II exceeded that mark with 380,000.
``The demand for tickets in Tampa is overwhelming and a testament to the fact that this is such a compelling fight,'' said Joe DeGuardia, Tarver's promoter and president/CEO of Star Boxing, Inc. ``The fans recognize that Tarver-Jones is a unique rivalry and being able to watch them fight makes the fan a part of boxing history.
``Expect to see the same urgency in the ring on Oct. 1 as there is among fans for tickets.``

World renowned Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli is one of the most successful recording artists in the world. Bocelli, blinded by congenital glaucoma and an accident in his youth, was a piano bar performer who suddenly burst into international stardom in 1992 after recording a demo tape of a song specifically written for Luciano Pavarotti. With Pavarotti's support, Bocelli's fame and popularity increased with high-profile performances at numerous European festivals and galas. He has gone from playing Italian piano bars to selling out stadiums around the world. This is a once in a lifetime event to see Mr. Bocelli accompanied by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maestro Carlo Bernini in the beautiful and intimate 1,700 seat Ferguson Center Concert Hall.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - They still call him the hardest-working man in show business, but James Brown could just as easily be considered the Cecil B. DeMille of the concert circuit.
In one of Brown's typically large-scale productions, more than 35 people trotted out onstage over the course of Saturday's performance at the Greek Theater. His band, the Soul Generals, naturally was big: three horn players, three drummers, three guitarists and two bass players. Add the three background singers who comprise the Bitter Sweets, frequent soloist Tanya Rae and even a near-inaudible 12-piece string section.
A James Brown show, however, requires extras, and there were plenty of them: two female dancers with sculpted abs and bikini bottoms that advertised "J" and "B" on either cheek, emcee Danny Ray, escort R.J., a woman in a cream dress and dangly diamond earrings who slow-danced with Brown during "Try Me," an official-looking guy who gave a James Brown hand towel to a woman in the front row and even a goofy accountant type who sauntered onstage to dork his way through the finale, "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine."
The 72-year-old Brown might not be as active as he once was onstage, but he still offers a fair share of his patented slide steps, mike-stand acrobatics and hammy staging. It was an exercise in excess, with lots of visuals to enhance his funk foundation: simple, repetitive bass lines; chunks of rhythm guitar; occasional blues interludes; and those familiar J.B. grunts and squeals.
The spare parts of the set list have changed just a little: "Living in America" and "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," for example, were noticeably missing, while "If I Ruled the World" oddly made the cut, and a Spanish rap and a piece of OutKast's "The Way You Move" also were interjected.
Still, the core remains the same: Give 'em plenty to watch and ladle it with groove. Brown no longer is groundbreaking, and it's fair to call the format predictable. But the Godfather remains entertaining nonetheless. More>>>

THOUGH they have claimed the mantle of respectability ever since they jumped online in the late 1990's, ticket scalpers have not been able to shake their reputation as hustlers out to make a quick buck on sold-out shows. But with America Online, the tamest player on the Wild Wild Web, joining them, can legitimacy be far behind?
Last week, AOL opened its Ticket Marketplace service on its City Guide pages, offering everything from a front-row seat to the Paul McCartney concert at Madison Square Garden in September for $3,420, to a nosebleed view of the Rolling Stones at Comerica Park in Detroit on Wednesday for $56.
Don't have $3,420 to spare? You might try Ticketmaster, the official ticket merchant for the McCartney show. The best seat available last week was four levels up and behind the stage, but it was a relative bargain at $99.
Tempted by the chance to see the Stones from afar for $56? You should be; that is half the price offered for a comparable seat by Ticketmaster.
AOL doesn't actually sell the seats. Rather, it serves as the intermediary for two Internet purveyors that do, TicketsNow.com and StubHub.com. Like the industry as a whole, both sites have enjoyed strong growth over the past year. And like the rest of the industry, both crave a more intangible asset, public acceptance as straight shooters. Such acclaim has so far eluded them, but they are hoping AOL's blessing might bring it within reach.
"We've been doing this for a while, and still people often ask, 'Is this legal?' " said Kenneth Dotson, chief marketing officer for TicketsNow in Crystal Lake, Ill. "The fact that AOL is making such a big splash with this is an indication to people that not only is this legal, but it's legitimate, and a great alternative if they can't get the tickets they want."
And don't call the business he is in scalping. "Secondary ticketing" is the industry's preferred term, though "online ticket brokers" or "ticket marketplaces" will also do nicely. "With the street-corner scalper, you have to pay cash, there's no way to get your money back and the guy won't be there after the game to help you if you've gotten a counterfeit ticket," Mr. Dotson said.
By contrast, he says, TicketsNow opens its site only to licensed ticket resellers, and screens them as an extra precaution.
Furthermore, he says, TicketsNow guarantees the authenticity of all tickets it sells - an important consideration for, say, a business executive who invites a prospective client to a baseball playoff or big musical event. Being turned away at the door might make a bad impression, and "just getting your money back doesn't solve the problem," he said.
EBay, which analysts say is by far the biggest secondary-ticketing site, does not disclose ticket sales. More>>>

Hawthorne Heights, Silverstein, Bayside and Aiden all artists on the Victory Records label--join forces for the "Never Sleep Again Tour," which hits the United States and Canada this fall.
"For us this tour represents a big family reunion," Hawthorne Heights drummer Eron Bucciarelli said in a press release. "Silverstein took us out on our first real tour, it helped us out immensely and we will be forever grateful. We've toured with Bayside a few times before; they are great people and an extremely underrated band. Aiden has unlimited potential and we want to give them the same opportunity that Silverstein provided us."
Hawthorne Heights' debut album "The Silence in Black and White" has sold more than 500,000 copies, spurred in part by the group's appearances on the Warped Tour. Its first single, "Ohio is for Lovers," sits at No. 34 on the Radio and Records Modern Rock chart. According to a press release, the video for the band's second single, "Niki FM," pays homage to the 1980s movie "Say Anything." It will begin airing this fall.
The band will also perform on ABC-TV's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" on Aug. 30. Shortly afterward, it will head to Hoboken, NJ, to begin work on a new album, to be produced by David Bendeth (Breaking Benjamin, Antigone Rising

Many of rock's biggest bands will perform in the Twin Cities in the next month, including the Rolling Stones, U2, Coldplay and Green Day. They'll have their giant video screens and neato-keeno stage props, and their shows will undoubtedly be big spectacles.
They can all only hope, though, that they'll have half the visceral energy, raw oomph and all-out bravery that the biggest little band in rock, the White Stripes, showed Friday during their first of two sold-out nights at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis.
In an era when arena shows and flashy rock 'n' roll in general are back in vogue, the Stripes made the refreshing decision to downsize venues (from the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in 2003) and keep their music the one and only spectacle.
Except for their red-and-white stage coloring, the bluesy Detroit duo was absolutely frill-less but positively thrilling for 95 straight minutes. In that time, they crammed in 30 songs and varied the setlist greatly from other cities (something else you rarely get at big arena shows).
Opening with the feisty "Black Math," frontman Jack White, 29, came out in a gunfighter hat, pointy moustache and tight black pants, looking like a cross between old Michael Jackson and recent Bob Dylan. He seldom spoke to the crowd, but his enthusiasm flashed throughout the show with kid-like smiles. All the while, his ex-wife Meg White -- whom he still calls his sister -- egged him on by mouthing the lyrics behind her drum kit. More>>>
