New England and Philadelphia finally meet up in the NFL's championship game. It's long overdue. While the Patriots have won two of the last three Super Bowls, the Eagles fell short in their bid to join them in the Big Dance during that time, losing three straight NFC title bouts before routing the Falcons this time around.
New England will be looking to defend its title and become the first team to win three Super Bowls in four seasons since Dallas (1992-95), while the Eagles are making their first appearance since January 1981, when they fell to the Raiders in Super Bowl XV. With the AFC title win over the Steelers, Bill Belichick improved to 9-1 in the postseason to match Vince Lombardi's NFL-best playoff coaching record, while quarterback Tom Brady ran his playoff record to 8-0. DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Even in a sport where turnover ranks up there with wrecks and cut tires as one of them racin' deals, the changes among several NASCAR Nextel Cup teams this season bear watching.
Last week saw DEI teammates Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Michael Waltrip conduct preseason testing at Daytona International Speedway with new crew chiefs, along with Jeremy Mayfield. Bobby Labonte, Sterling Marlin and Brian Vickers arrive for this week's session with new skippers in one of the biggest switcheroos in recent memory.
"It's going to be tough," admitted Earnhardt, who will banter with Pete Rondeau this season after several years with Tony Eury and car chief Tony Eury Jr., who is Waltrip's new crew chief.
"It's going to be a different experience for them. Hopefully, they'll handle it well. There's a lot of pressure, but I can see that this will go either way. Eventually we'll do what it takes to get it right and win." More>>>

RALEIGH, N.C. (Sports Network) - Ilian Evtimov poured in 17 points and dished out four assists to lead the North Carolina State Wolfpack to a 76-68 upset over the eighth-ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at the RBC Center.
Julius Hodge was held to just one field goal, but went 12-for-14 at the line and finished with 14 points and ripped down a game-high 10 rebounds for the Wolfpack (11-5, 1-2 ACC), who snapped a four-game losing streak and won their first game since December 28.
"We looked pretty desperate to me," Hodge said. "We just went out and gave it our all. We got the win, and I love to win, so I don't even want to talk about the past now."
Trailing 64-49 with 4:42 remaining in the game, Georgia Tech went on a 12-0 run, capped by back-to-back baskets by Muhammad, to get within three. Evtimov then drained a long three-pointer and scored eight points in the final 2:15 to close out the Yellow Jackets.
"On the road, it's tough to put yourself in that situation, get way down and have to dig from behind," Georgia Tech head coach Paul Hewitt said. "In the second half, our defense was able to put us back into the game."
Elsewhere in North Carolina, J.J. Redick had 28 points and Daniel Ewing added 17, as the fifth-ranked Duke Blue Devils topped the Virginia Cavaliers, 80-66. More>>>

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Donovan McNabb tossed two first-half touchdown passes to help the Philadelphia Eagles cruise to a 27-14 win over the Minnesota Vikings Sunday and reach the NFC championship game for a fourth consecutive year.
Next Sunday the Eagles will host the high-flying Atlanta Falcons, who booked their place in the conference finals on Saturday with a 47-17 demolition of the St. Louis Rams.
"Today we just wanted to come out, be offensive and continue to work hard," McNabb told reporters after the game. "The good thing about this year is we are a better team and we're healthy. "Our goal is to win the whole thing and we'll take it one game at a time."
In the buildup to the contest, there was concern the Eagles might come out flat since they were missing injured all-star wide receiver Terrell Owens. They had also not played a meaningful game in nearly month after clinching their division and a first round bye.
However, midway through the first quarter the Eagles flexed their offensive muscles, scoring touchdowns on three consecutive possessions on way to a commanding 21-7 halftime lead.
McNabb completed 21 of 33 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns. More>>>

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Tom Brady threw for one touchdown and ran for another while the New England Patriots's defense shut down Peyton Manning and the high-powered attack of the Indianapolis Colts to claim a 20-3 playoff victory Sunday.
The win sends the defending Super Bowl champion Patriots into the AFC championship game for the third time in four years, traveling to the Pittsburgh Steelers, who advanced with a 20-17 overtime triumph over the New York Jets Saturday.
For the Colts and Manning, their twice MVP quarterback, it was a bitterly frustrating end to a record season. Manning, who had one of the finest campaigns in NFL history and set a record for touchdown passes in a season with 49, could not find the end zone as a ferocious New England defense held the fourth highest-scoring team of all time to a single field goal.
"Our defense made this game," said Brady after improving his playoff record to a perfect 7-0. "Holding to three points one of the best offenses in NFL history is something special."
A clash featuring two of the most explosive offenses in the league failed to produce the expected fireworks as stingy defenses combined with cold, difficult conditions in snowy Foxboro to blunt the high-powered attacks of both teams. More>>>

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- Patrick Sparks scored 15 points against his former coach and No. 9 Kentucky cruised to a 76-55 victory over Georgia on Saturday.
Chuck Hayes added 13 points and 11 rebounds for Kentucky (12-2, 3-0 Southeastern Conference), which led by as many as 30 points before taking it easy on the Bulldogs down the stretch.
Georgia (6-8) dropped to 0-4 in the SEC for the first time since 1998, when the Bulldogs opened league play with five straight losses.
Kentucky's dominance was most evident on the boards, where the Wildcats held a staggering 44-18 rebounding edge. Georgia didn't have anyone with more than three rebounds.
Sparks began his career at Western Kentucky, playing for Dennis Felton. After the coach moved to Georgia, Sparks transferred to Kentucky, his choice of schools all along. After sitting out a year, he claimed a spot in the Wildcats' lineup with his passing and outside shooting.
In addition to leading his team in scoring, Sparks also had a game-high five assists.
Hayes, a senior, surpassed 1,000 points in his career, finishing the day with 1,006. Freshman Ramel Bradley chipped in with 14 points for the Wildcats, who shot 56 percent (30-of-54) from the field.
Kentucky led all the way, building a 12-2 lead just 5 minutes into the game. From that early deficit, the Bulldogs never got any closer than seven the rest of the way. The Wildcats' biggest lead was 68-38.
Amazingly, Georgia swept the season series a year ago, winning at home and at Rupp Arena. But, after losing four seniors from that team, the big question around Athens is whether the Bulldogs can win an SEC game this season.
They played respectably in losses to Tennessee and Mississippi, but the other two conference games have been ugly: a 20-point defeat at South Carolina and the expected blowout by the Wildcats. Whole Article>>>
Kentucky improved its lead in the series against Georgia to a staggering 103-21.

ATLANTA (Jan. 15, 2005) -- There's more to the Atlanta Falcons than Michael Vick.
Sure, the Falcons' one-of-a-kind quarterback put on quite a show in the NFC playoffs, throwing two touchdown passes and running for 119 yards. But his teammates managed to escape Vick's considerable shadow, putting Atlanta within one victory of the Super Bowl.
Warrick Dunn ran for a 62-yard touchdown, Allen Rossum set an NFL playoff record for punt returns and Atlanta routed the St. Louis Rams 47-17.
The Falcons advanced to the NFC championship game for only the second time in the franchise's 39-year history. They will either play host to Minnesota or travel to Philadelphia next weekend for a spot in the Super Bowl.
"You saw a team that plays together," rookie coach Jim Mora said. "You saw a team that's pretty complete. We like to say in the locker room that the best player on our team is our team. We proved that tonight with the way we played."
The only other time Atlanta made it this far was the 1998 season. The "Dirty Birds" got all the way to the Super Bowl, only to get blown out by Denver in John Elway's final game. More>>>

PITTSBURGH (Jan. 15, 2005) -- The Pittsburgh Steelers' greatest season since the 1970s was all but lost, and Ben Roethlisberger's unbeaten rookie streak seemed to be over. Then Doug Brien missed the biggest kick he likely will ever try. Twice.
Jeff Reed did what Brien couldn't do -- make a game-winning field goal -- and the Steelers somehow beat the New York Jets 20-17 in a remarkable overtime playoff game filled with wild swings in momentum and emotion.
Roethlisberger overcame two huge interceptions -- one for a touchdown and another that appeared to doom the Steelers late in the fourth quarter -- to lead a decisive drive that began at their own 13 and sent Pittsburgh to the AFC championship game Jan. 23 at home against New England or Indianapolis.
Reed's 33-yarder with a little more than 12 minutes gone in overtime won it and was his 19th successful conversion in a row, tying Gary Anderson's team record.
The loss will go down as one of the most excruciating in the Jets' star-crossed history. Brien's twin misses were doubly stunning disappointments for a gutty team on the verge of its biggest upset since Broadway Joe's guaranteed victory against the Colts in the January 1969 Super Bowl. I know this is way off topic but some of you may need a laugh!
To those of us who have children in our lives, whether they are our own, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or students...here is something to make you chuckle.
Whenever your children are out of control, you can take comfort from the thought that even God's omnipotence did not extend to His own children.
After creating heaven and earth, God created Adam and Eve. And the first thing he said was "DON'T!" "Don't what?" Adam replied. "Don't eat the forbidden fruit." God said. "Forbidden fruit? We have forbidden fruit? Hey Eve..we have forbidden fruit!!!!!"
" No Way!"
"Yes way!" "Do NOT eat the fruit!" said God. "Why"
"Because I am your Father and I said so!" God replied, wondering why He hadn't stopped creation after making the elephants. A few minutes later, God saw His children having an apple break and He was ticked! "Didn't I tell you not to eat the fruit?" God asked. "Uh huh," Adam replied. "Then why did you?" said the Father. "I don't know," said Eve. "She started it!" Adam said "Did not!" "Did too!" "DID NOT!"
Having had it with the two of them, God's punishment was that Adam and Eve should have children of their own. Thus the pattern was set and it has never changed.
BUT THERE IS REASSURANCE IN THE STORY! If you have persistently and lovingly tried to give children wisdom and they haven't taken it, don't be hard on yourself. If God had trouble raising children, what makes you think it would be a piece of cake for you?
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT!
1. You spend the first two years of their life teaching them to walk and talk. Then you spend the next sixteen telling them to sit down and shut up.
2. Grandchildren are God's reward for not killing your own children.
3. Mothers of teens now know why some animals eat their young.
4. Children seldom misquote you. In fact, they usually repeat word for word what you shouldn't have said.
5. The main purpose of holding children's parties is to remind yourself that there are children more awful than your own.
6. We childproofed our homes, but they are still getting in. ADVICE FOR THE DAY: Be nice to your kids. They will choose your nursing home one day.
AND FINALLY:
IF YOU HAVE A LOT OF TENSION AND YOU GET A HEADACHE, DO WHAT IT SAYS ON THE ASPIRIN BOTTLE: "TAKE TWO ASPIRIN" AND "KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN"!!!!!
